A: First of all, no I’m not.
B: Are you sure?
A: I voted for the other one…
B: The other who?
A: Ok, bad example.
B: And what about the guy?
A: What guy?
B: The guy on 135th Street, at the bottom of the bridge?
A: What about him?
B: Don’t you be ignoring him and his sign at your car window, when you’re waiting for the light?
A: I’m no saint.
B: …
A: But I ain’t no fascist. I’m Black!
B: You know who else is Black?
A: I’m not like them!
B: Then what are you?
A: Regular Black, ya know…
B: …
A: Not one way or the other…not rich, relatively able, still –
B: So…privileged?
A: I boycotted! I give to mutual aide. I try my best.
B: What then of yourself?
A thinks “now it’s time for me to ask the questions!”
A: Whatchu mean?
B: How do you think of yourself? Your body? What do you think of your life?
A: This is getting pretty serious, too heady, don’t you think?
B: Seriously, what do you think of yourself?
A: I think I’m fine.
B: AND WHAT OF YOUR PRECARITY?
A: It’s hard. Feels like there’s no time to do nothing else but work. And spend and lament. And eat and laugh. And this conversation ain’t making me laugh.
B: Ok, what about your perfectionism?
A: Uhh, I think that has to do with my astrological sign more than anything else.
B: Oh, so it’s celestial?
A: Yep, it was written in the stars. I read about it on twitter today.
B: Are you sure it’s not racialized self-hate fueling your insatiable desire to be “better,” to be “right?”
A: I read about that on twitter today, too. Honestly, I’m just tryna vibe.
B: Did you get a whiff of any white supremacy today?
A: I was on theshaderoom for a little while –
B: What did you do about it?
A: I rolled my eyes at a lot of stuff. I don’t even follow them! Small acts of resistance add up.
B: I think I read that somewhere today.
A: So… do you believe I’m not a fascist?
B: Don’t you want to live in a nation state?
A: Yeah…but with everyone except white people.
B: Umm…that sorta sounds like an ethno-state.
A: Really, I thought it sounded kinda humanistic.
B is surprised by their own intrigue
B: Tell me more.
A: As far as I know[1] the concept of whiteness is largely an amalgam of violence, jurisprudence, erasure, and crepey skin.
B: Not sure about that last part.
A: Well, whiteness is a toxic social construct that continues to expand only in opposition against Black folks and OMP.
B: What’s OMP?
A: Other Melanated Peoples. I hate the term “BIPOC.”
B: Yeah, me too, it makes me think either ‘bisexual people of color,” or “two tupacs.”
They laugh.
A: Who even agreed to all of us even using that phrase? I bet it was a white person.
C: I BELIEVE THIS IS FASCISM!
A & B at the same time.
A & B: Who the fuck are you?
C: I’m Caucasian and the two of you have described something that has hurt my feelings, made me uncomfortable, and I’m here to tell you to STOP!
A & B at the same time
A & B: Stop what?
C was waving a gun, but they’ve dropped their bible.
C: Stop being so woke! Stop living in the past. I don’t see color. We gotta stop FAFO’ing.
C stands around listening, lurking, then finally leaves.
A: When did white people even start saying that? This is what I’m talking about – they belittle Black folks’ culture and then rip it off!
B: What are you saying?
A: Damn, I might be a little bit fascist, but against white people, thats it.
B: All of them?
A: No. That would definitely be fascist…right? Only some of them. I dunno, the queer ones, they cool.
B: Are you saying all queer white folks are good?
A: No. I can’t honestly say that, I mean not with a straight face anyway.[2]
B: Then what are you saying?
D: WE NEED TO GET TRUMP OUTTA HERE!
A & B to each other
A & B: Who the fuck is this guy?
D: I’m a Democrat!
A: Ok…
B (to D): So, what are you going to do?!
D: NOTHING!
D laughs manically and then scurries away on to their jet.
A: SEE!
B: sighs
A: Whiteness and all its spawn needs to be eradicated. It’s been outta style since the 90s.
B: We’re getting off track here!
A: Ok, I get it. I’m an oppressed person, who deep down wants to oppress her oppressor with his brand of oppression™. But that doesn’t make me no damn fascist!
B: Then what does it make you?
A: A human.

Thanks to all my lovely, loyal, paid subscribers; and all the new folks who continue to support Tiny Violences, it means a lot especially since there are so many great writers on the platform who have important things to say and who do so regularly. It means a lot to have you folks support my work. Anyways, let’s continue interrogating our beliefs, and not surrender our power to technocrats, autocrats, haters and wannabes. Remember what Alice Walker said, “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any, AND “Nobody is as powerful as we make them out to be.” Leave me a comment or a 🔋to let me know you’ve made it this far.
